Commentry – Play off Final – Blackpool vs Yeovil – Five Live

Posted May 27, 2007 by footy pod
Categories: commentry, Five Live

I know this isn’t a Phone in, but I am seeing if there is interest in downloading the commentry from Games. Bit of a shame it’s the end of the season really. Here we have Sunday’s Play off final commentry, with a bit of cricket nonsense at half time.

League One play-off final preview from BBC Sport

By Bristol City boss Gary Johnson

Blackpool's Andrew Morrell and Yeovil's Arron Davies (far right)

Morrell and Davies (far right) could be the key players for their teams

I think Blackpool and Yeovil are quite evenly matched and both teams have shown good, consistent form towards the end of the season.

Blackpool have had the biggest run – they really came out of the pack in the league and will have the momentum going into the final.

The confidence you gain from that sort of run is unbelievable.

However, Yeovil will not be short of confidence after they scored five against Nottingham Forest in their semi-final second leg – which was a superb feat.

So both sides will be in high spirits and the match will be treated as a one-off, where the season’s league meetings between the two will have no bearing.

It won’t matter that Blackpool took four points from Yeovil – I really think Yeovil have improved at the end of the season and will be a different proposition.

Both teams are also in free-scoring form and I think there’s a good chance that the final will be an open game.

I think tactically, both teams are attacking and like to impose their game on the opposition, and I think that will make for a good final.

It is the greatest thing in the world to get promoted via the play-offs

Bristol City boss Gary Johnson

And I predict there will be goals in the game as both teams have got strikers that have the scoring knack.

For Blackpool, Andrew Morrell is the man who gets the goals, and I also think Wesley Hoolahan is a tricky winger and can make an impact on the game.

A key player for Yeovil will be midfielder Arron Davies, who is in good form and I am sure he will want to put in a good performance on the big stage.

But I don’t think an individual will define the match, it will be a team performance – with seven or eight players on song.

Sometimes players are at this level because they are inconsistent. They all have ability and quality but it will all be about who can perform on the day, and more importantly which team gets it together on the day.

The team that finds their confidence to play their football and adapt to occasion will be the team that will settles first – and the opening goal could well be vital.

Both teams have got quality, I think the team who are mentally tougher will be the ones to come through.

It’s an incredible relief to me that I’ll be at the game knowing we have already won promotion with Bristol City after we finished second in the table.

Having said that, everybody loves the play-offs and I speak from experience when I say it is the greatest thing in the world to get promoted via the play-offs.

And if you had a crystal ball and you knew you were definitely going to be promoted either automatically or through the play-offs, you would choose to do it through the play-offs because of the feeling you get.

But of course, you cannot see into the future, so I’m glad Bristol City did not have to take that chance.

It must be the hardest thing to lose in the final, to feel like the nearly men and go back next season into the same division and face all the same teams again.

The fear of losing is tremendous. But the managers have to say to their lads ‘you’ve got us this far, doing what you do. Let’s see it through, get out there and play your natural game’.

It may be a cliche, but this game could really take off with an early goal. If one team scores, the other has to go for it – it really is all or nothing.

Regardless, I’m sure it will be a good game and a fantastic spectacle.
